Fourteen people became ill with stomach viruses (norovirus) after eating the Louisiana oysters at a New Orleans area restaurant on April 28 or 29. The illnesses were not life-threatening, and no one was hospitalized. DHH epidemiologists and sanitarians traced the norovirus outbreak to Louisiana oysters consumed at the same restaurant. The oysters were harvested from Area 23.

Norovirus is a virus that causes the “stomach flu,” or vomiting and diarrhea, in people. Norovirus usually begins 24 to 48 hours after exposure. Symptoms usually include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramping. Sometimes people have a low-grade fever, chills, headache, muscle aches and a general sense of tiredness. The illness is usually brief, with symptoms lasting a day or two. People can get norovirus several ways, including eating food or drinking liquids that are contaminated by infected food handlers. Cooking kills the virus, but outbreaks have occurred from eating undercooked oysters harvested from contaminated waters.

The closure order was signed today by Louisiana State Health Officer, Jimmy Guidry, M.D., and DHH Secretary Bruce D. Greenstein. The closure takes effect at sundown Tuesday, May 8, 2012. Area 23 harvesting area is expected to be closed for at least 21 days.

DHH has notified local oyster harvesters that work the affected area, as well as the Louisiana Oyster Task Force.

Volgens een woordvoerster is het toevel, maar wij vragen ons of dit ook zo is, want net zoals veel zorg instellingen communiceren ze slecht over dit soort uitbraken, zo is er bijvoorbeeld op de website (zie: http://www.leveste.nl/actualiteiten ) van de zorg instelling helemaal niets terug te vinden over de uitbraak. Iedereen die met het norovirus te maken heeft weet dat het inperken van bewegingen (bezoek) een goede manier is om het virus onder controle te houden. Maar de communcatie laat hier weer duidelijk te wensen over. Naar ons inziens zouden alle instellingen verplicht moeten zijn om alle uitbraken publiekelijk te melden, niet omdat je hier aan zou kunnen zien wie goed of slecht is, maar om de uitbraken zo goed mogelijk te beperken.

Responsible Visiting – How you can help keep Musgrove free of Norovirus (winter vomiting)

Keeping our patients safe from infection is a priority at Musgrove Park Hospital and we have robust procedures in place when dealing with outbreaks of Norovirus.

As soon as Norovirus is suspected the ward is closed to new admissions and transfers are stopped to help reduce the risk of spread. Staff members permanently based on wards with infected patients are not allowed to work on other wards. Infected wards are not re-opened until there have been no patient with symptoms for 72 hours. Before re-opening to new admissions, the ward and equipment is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

As a visitor you can also help us to prevent the spread of infections, like Norovirus, to patients by:

• Not visiting the hospital if you, or anyone you have been in contact with, have had any symptoms of diarrhoea or vomiting in the last two days . Stomach bugs that cause diarrhoea and vomiting such as Norovirus are highly contagious and can spread rapidly through schools, colleges and hospitals.
• Using the hand gel at the entrance to the ward and again on leaving. Rub the gel into your hands until it fully evaporates ( approximately 30 seconds) without forgetting fingernails, thumbs between fingers and wrists.

If you visit more than one patient please clean your hands in between visits too. If you visit the hospital when you are unwell you run the risk of passing harmful bugs on to patients who are already vulnerable. Please help us to look after your loved ones by being a ‘responsible visitor’ of Musgrove Park Hospital.

“If you’re healthy and you’ve been healthy for the last few days, go ahead and mix up a batch of cookies or slice up a fruit tray,” said IDPH Medical Director Dr. Patricia Quinlisk. “But if you’ve had any sort of stomach illness, do not prepare food of any kind for others. In particular, symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea should be your ticket out of the kitchen until 48 hours have passed since your recovery.”

In the last 10 days, IDPH has been investigating reports of eight medium to large outbreaks of probable norovirus in five counties. Norovirus is a common cause of viral gastroenteritis (also called “the stomach bug”) and most of these outbreaks are associated with sick people preparing food for others.

Three groups got ill after eating at a restaurant where several food handlers had also been ill. Outbreaks were also associated with events like holiday parties and holiday potlucks, where foods were likely prepared and served by recently ill people.

“We’re also getting lots anecdotal reports of probable norovirus outbreaks in other areas of the state,” Quinlisk added. “This virus can be a real holiday spoiler, making your friends and loved ones sick for several days. So, if you are or have been sick, you’ll just have to wait for the next opportunity to make your signature fudge-you’re off kitchen duty until 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped!”

They found norovirus from 3 of them.

According to Tepco, 12/15 AM, sub-contract workers had diarrhea and vomiting on the bus from their hotel to Fukushima plants.
Still one of them is in the hospital. They stayed in different hotels. Tepco suspects it’s from norovirus.
All of them were involved in the construction of the tank for radioactive waste.
